One of the darkest, most tormented and difficult stories I've ever read.
I read "Gone Girl" by Gillian Flynn back in early 2013 and I liked this book, but I didn't really connect to the characters, I always felt like something was missing. This didn't happen with "Dark Places" though. The story started out so well and I instantly fell in love with Libby Day and her flawed and broken personality. The plot enveloped me and I just couldn't put the book down. I had so many speculations about what rea ...more

Dark places was indeed very dark. The story mostly goes in two years current and then the day when the murders happened. This was a slow burner of the ending where in we pull the layers of secrets and story one by one. Next book of Gilliam Flynn's I intend to read is Gone Girl.
People who don't read generally ask me my reasons for reading. Simply put I just love reading and so to that end I have made it my motto to just Keep on Reading. I love to read everything except for Self Help books but eve ...more

Stay away from this book if you don't like disturbing thrillers, this would not be the book for you.
My first Gillian Flynn book was Gone Girl, and I find myself wanting to read all the time until i finish it. Before sleep, right after i arrived home from work, in the bathroom, and at lunch on my desk. It was a huge page turner. I read Dark Places hoping for the same thing, but didn't really find it until the last 150 pages or so. I struggled to get through the first 100 pages, it was boring and ...more

Interesting premise but turns grisly towards the end. Those of you who have read her gone girl would know that a darkness pervades her writing. A quick back jacket reading would tell you that the protagonist's family had been killed when she was 7 years old and her testimony had put her 15 year old brother in jail for a life term for killing their mother and two sisters. The novel moves between then and now, 22 years later, when a group has contacted her to dig in the murders. There are convolut

I think I would have liked this better if I had read it before sharp objects and gone girl. The characters all had their issues, but none were as disturbed as those in Flynn's other two novels. The description on the back on the book led me to believe that there would be much more suspense. Although I kept reading in order to find out who committed the murders, it wasn't as much of a page turner as I had hoped.

This is one of the most disturbing books I have read in a long time. However, that quality is my favorite aspect of the book! This is a book that will stay with you for a long while afterwards, and I actually Googled the 1980s farm crisis to learn more about the turbulent times described in the book. Gillian Flynn is one of my favorite authors because of this book and her other ones!
