When I learned about the background for this story I was very intrigued. So when it came off hold at the library I decided to give it a shot it had been on my TBR for some time. However, as much as I wanted to be in support of this idea and be a 'good person' I finished this book with many questions. If it wasn't for the length I would say yes loved it, but I don't feel like I fully was able to grasp how horrible the school was and being someone who enjoys history I wanted to know more. Shelves: audible

4.5/5 wow, lots of slap you in the face moments (important) and a reality check. I listened to the audio and hope to read it physically in the near future. Based on true events, this book is a wake up call to our history and more importantly our future.

3.5* I think I am in the minority when it comes to this book as it was a good but not a great read for me.

What I loved was Whitehead’s writing. The story is harrowing and tackles race and abuse through the lens of a reform home for boys.

I think the problem for me was I didn’t fully connect to the characters. For a lot of people what Whitehead did not say (hinting at abuse and background stories rather than being explicit) enriched the story. For me I think it did not connect me to the character ...more
