A man is murdered at a writers' retreat and one of Vera's neighbors, Joanna, is the prime suspect. It quickly becomes clear that someone is trying to frame Joanna. Unfortunately, although the group of people at the retreat didn't all plan it this way, they are all connected in some way in their pasts. It creates a very tangled thread for Vera and her team to unwind and to complicate matters further, it becomes apparent that someone is setting up the crime scenes to mirror fictional crime scenes
