Plot:
Tessa gets to stay much to Jem’s delight and Will’s hatred. Thinking the two of them were going to be more than friends, Will pushes Tessa away, and where he is civil with her in public, he would not seek her alone or explain why he said those horrible things to her on the rooftop. With the disaster at the London Institute that led to the Magister’s identity being revealed, their entire crew being fooled by human Nate, the Consul was not happy with Charlotte and Henry. Pushed by Benedict Li Plot:

With the disaster at the London Institute that led to the Magister’s identity being revealed, their entire crew being fooled by human Nate, the Consul was not happy with Charlotte and Henry. Pushed by Benedict Lightwood, Charlotte and Henry have two weeks to bring Mortmain to justice, as it is their fault they lost him. Replacing the servants that they lost, the Consul, again pushed by Benedict, deemed Tessa and Sophie must be trained in hand-to-hand combat if they were going to stay at the Institute. Trained by Gabriel and his older brother Gideon, Tessa learns why the Lightwoods hate Will but is unable to talk to Will about it, due to Will's avoidance of her. With Jessamine still refusing to have anything to do with the shadow world, Tessa finds herself growing closer and confiding in Jem, a steady rock in this uncertain world Tessa finds herself in. As the London Institute loyal residents dive deeper into Mortmain’s past to find out why he hates shadowhunters, they begin to separate on their individual journeys: Tessa finding out who she is, Will trying to break his curse, Jem figuring out if he deserves love or not, Charlotte and Henry working out the bumps in their marriage, and Jessamine - poor poor Jessie, trying to find a way out of this shadow world.

Thoughts:
Cassandra Clare continues to wonder readers with the fascinating shadow world they created. Continuing on in Victoria London, Clare follows Tessa as she is allowed to continue living in the London Institute, as the shadowhunters still have to protect her from Mortmain who escaped in the last novel. Focusing more on the overarching storyline than focusing on Tessa, the majority of the novel was spent on figuring out Mortmain and Will’s past rather than Tessa. Clare expands the world bringing in other Institutes and past events, allowing new issues to arise and be fixed with this novel - like Will and why he acts the way he acts, and how the Lightwoods came to hate Charlotte, and why Benedict is bent on having her thrown out. A huge focus is expanded to Sophie in this story, compared to the first novel, allowing her to have a voice and join the ranks of leading female characters in this novel, as even though Sophie is a servant, she plays a vital role in being Tessa’s friend, and getting Gideon to chose them over his family (the power of a female’s touch!). I felt a little cheated on Will’s big reveal, as Clare made Will seem to have a much more complex past than it was, however, I have a feeling the complexity of Will’s character will come out in the third and final novel of the series, as he knows has to win Tessa back. Not a huge shocker, but Clare did allow Tessa to move on after her horrific conversation with Will straight into the arms of Jem. Very, very similar to Clare’s “Clary cannot be with Jace so she’ll date Simon”, Clare has Tessa flirt and grow closer with Jem, while constantly wanting the nice version of Will back - ending us with a nice love triangle trope. With Tessa and Will being as much as an item as the 1800s would allow in the first book, and now Jem and Tessa together in the second, it will be interesting to see who Clare makes Tessa end up within the end, as currently our boys are tied. Last but not least, Jessie is still one of my favorite characters, and I applaud her efforts in how she is constantly trying to get out of the shadowhunter lifestyle. Where her role is larger than in the first novel, Clare definitely left Jessie's character development alone, as to why mess with perfection, only to make Jessie a bit harsher towards Tessa, especially in her love department. With another cliffhanger ending, Clare is wrapping up this series as quickly as 500 pages allow it to go, giving the plot much time to build, only to let it all come crashing down in preparation for the final novel. ...more

UGH!!!!! THAT ENDING!!!

Well, that definitely did not disappoint. I am looking forward to reading Clockwork Princess. I like the writing style, and I hope the next book picks up where this one left off. That scene at the end with Will and Tessa about ripped my heart out, but I am not going to elaborate on that, because I don't want to give any spoilers. I still love this world and can't wait to read Clockwork Princess! ...more

4.5 stars.
I liked it a lot more than the first one. It always kept me into the story althouht it is not fast-paced.
I have no words for Will and Jem other than both are so perfect in their way that were I Tessa, I would not have been able to choose between the two.
I cannot wait to read Clockwork Princess!!
