This book was recommended to me by my friend Wednesday. Wednesday and I usually have the same taste when it comes to novels, especially Young Adult ones, so when she recommended this one to me I immediately went to the library and picked it up. I started the novel with high hopes... and maybe those hopes were a little bit too high.
The Winner's Curse tells the story of Kestrel, a girl who is pretty well off. That's actually an understatement, she's freaking rich! She can have anything she wants ...more

Trigger warning: attempted rape
From the first page it's obvious how well written this book is. The author definitely has skill.
The Bad: (More the just okay rather than bad.)
The world itself was nothing special, and there were no real fantasy elements besides the fictional setting.
The first half was slower paced, but not boring. Oddly enough, it was more boring once things picked up. (view spoiler) ...more

Reread in 2018. Still as beautiful, deceptive and painful as it was when I first read it.

This book was so intriguing and gorgeous I don't even know where to start.
The Winner's Curse by Marie Rutkoski follows Kestrel - the general's daughter - who starts falling for the slave she bought at an auction, amidst war, lies and deception.

really..I LOVE THIS BOOK!!
and because I bothered to read the author's note/acknowledgement, I discovered that the plot is somewhat based on Greco-roman war.
while reading the book, i wondered if this is based on history of any country..i dont know the details of greco-roman war but its good to know that my mind is not playing tricks on me and connecting random facts just to feel certain kind of emotion..or connection, so yeah..
and the game of bites and sting is somewhat similar to a strategic gam ...more

Oh god I don't even know where to began from.
My expectations from this book were so high up in the sky, shining like a goddamn diamond, and now then they pretty much fell crashing down at a velocity so high, they went straight through the fucking earth.
RATING: 3.5 stars
“The Winner’s Curse is when you come out on top of the bid, but only by paying a steep price.”

Preordering this book turned out to be a good decision. The Winner's Curse is one of those books I just had to keep reading. If you are a fan of YA, fantasy, or romance, you should definitely give this book a try. It's very nicely written. Rutkoski is clearly a talented writer, and I will be looking into other books she has written in the future.

It was an ok book but I expected a lot more action and way more romance. Hopefully the next one is better though I don't know why I'm trying so hard on this book
