Obsidian (Lux, #1) in The Wide Web of Friends in YA Books

Review with some spoilers

First of all I have to say that I didn't even want to read this book because I wasn't impressed by the blurb and after having read Jennifer's Half Blood series, I wasn't really impressed by her writing style. I'm not trying to offend anyone, but taste is taste and she didn't do it for me. But I bowed to peer pressure and bought Obsidian. Sigh... I should have known better.

First of all I have to say that I didn't even want to read this book because I wasn't impressed by the blurb and after having read Jennifer's Half Blood series, I wasn't really impressed by her writing style. I'm not trying to offend anyone, but taste is taste and she didn't do it for me. But I bowed to peer pressure and bought Obsidian. Sigh... I should have known better.

Obsidian was a bad version of Twilight but with sexy aliens instead who didn't sparkle but were made of light. Right. It wasn't a blatant copy but it was impossible to miss the similarities. That was actually fine but don't go base your book on somebody else's work and then make fun of said work. That is just bad form and plain rude.

My problems with Obsidian:

1. Douchebag hero who knows he is a douchebag and think it's cool to act that way. He claims he acts that way because he is trying to protect his sister from the bad human (the heroine). He doesn't want the heroine to get friendly to them because she is apparently a danger to the very powerful aliens, yikes. But it's okay for him to play hot and cold games with the heroine. He also didn't want the heroine to find out that they were aliens (yeah, because him referring to her as them, wasn't clue enough that they weren't human, right).

2. Idiotic heroine who has an unnatural attraction to douchebag hero and keeps taking his shit despite her feeble attempts to not take his shit (dumping spaghetti on him or flipping him off is the way to do it apparently. It could work if she was maybe five). She is also very dense and has an inferiority complex. Yeah, she has a membership to the 'I'm a plain looking girl who managed to capture the attention of the unbelievably super human hottie' club. Bella and Nora welcome you Katy.

3. Speed light way in which the relationships between the characters developed. Katy meets Dee (douchebag's sister) and after a few encounters they are best friends. Never mind that Dee never managed to reveal much about herself in said encounters and had a brother who simply hated Katy's guts for no reason. Yeah, right. I could see that happening. And despite the fact that Daemon treated Katy like dirt most of the time, she trusted deep in her bones that he would never hurt her. Yes, Katy, go listen to your addled teenager intuition. I won't feel sorry when they find your body ditched in a swamp.

I managed to read half of the book, so I can only express my opinion for what I read. I did read some reviews and I got the gist of the rest of it to know that it won't get any better.

It was a quite entertaining read. Though I might say it's a typical hate-then-love affair, but the story alone is good, kept me intrigued minus the cliché rant of Katy at the beginning but I was glad that she had this strong side, at the latter part. Maybe even 4.5 for this one. The story is rather Twilight-esque at times, but I really liked it and had a hard time putting it down! LOVE the characters--particularly Katy, Daemon, Dee, Carissa, and Lesa. Love the love/hate/incredibly sexy thing going on with Katy and Daemon. The plot is fun, too, and the alien mythology is unique and interesting. Some very tense, scary parts, too. The sexual chemistry and tension between the couple is very intense (and hot!). I've been hearing a lot of good reviews about this book so I finally gave in and upped it in my tbr list. And I'm not even the least bit disappointed! I was not expecting much, really. We're talking about aliens after all. But I fell so in love after just the first chapter. It's so entertaining I can hardly put it down. :)

"Stopping by one of the empty tables, I let out a breath of happiness. I was always able to lose myself in reading. And I'm not even the least bit disappointed! I was not expecting much, really. We're talking about aliens after all. But I fell so in love after just the first chapter. It's so entertaining I can hardly put it down. :)

This alone made me love the book. I mean, come on! A female protagonist who is a huge book lover AND a book blogger? I'm sold.

"Daemon's look dared me to not listen to him, and that's pretty much why I agreed. He didn't control my life. I did."

I know that prom would end badly. And as much as I wanted to strangle Katy for not listening to Daemon, I realized I actually would've hated her if she listened to him. Daemon has been nothing but a jerk to her. Yes, there's the occasional heart-warming moments when Daemon was actually bordering sweet but he's a jerk 98% of the time. If she obeyed him just because he said so, it would've made me like her less.

"No matter where I went, what I was running from would still be with me — Kat. She wasn't just back in the house, in that bed. She was with me now, inside me. And there was no outrunning that."

Oh Daemon. He kinda reminds me of Kelley Armstrong's Derek Souza. What with his jerk attitude and his overprotectiveness. But, unlike Derek, you can see through Daemon. You know that even if he's acting like a jerk, he hates it. Don't get me wrong, I wanna punch the guy in the face sometimes. But if you're surrounded by people who fear things they don't understand (which sometimes leads to that thing's destruction) and not to mention the DOD, you get a little overprotective of your own. And yes, I am so in love with him.

And as much as I wanna smack Daemon for being such a jerk to Katy, I also understand it. What happened to Dawson and Bethany is a constant reminder of what will happen if he shows his feelings for Katy. But fuck the DOD, I officially ship these two. ...more

First off, I'd like to find out if Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...is a word. Because that is the only way I can describe this book.

I found myself on edge the entire book, whether it be because Katy and Daemon are so electrically hot, or because of their constant bickering. Which reminds me of how my husband and I are. However, he is not mean about it like Daemon was. I couldnt believe some of the things he said to Katy. The nerve!

Hello, my name is Amber and I have a problem.

I'm in love with another fictional guy. I don't think I can properly portray the depth of my love for this book. Or rather, Daemon Black (but we'll get to that later).
