[close] 5 years ago I decided to spend a month traveling from Beijing to Tibet and down the 3 river gorges. I never dreamed I would go for such a long period of time by myself but I did it. I learned so much about the history of China/ Tibet and actually visited in communities relocated due to the flooding. These relocation settlements are like the community described in this book. Meeting people who witnessed the cultural revolution and could share what the experience was for them further made me appreciate this book. While in Beijing- I spent time in the hutong with an elderly woman who is one of the last to have experienced having had her feet bound. Through a translator I learned about her life with her husband and mother in law- living in the hutong- during the cultural revolution. Really made me think.
