Brilliant. My first Hurston book. How can that be, with an education in English lit? Bah humbug to the professors who left her off their reading lists. This is some of the most remarkable and inventive prose I've ever read. While it took me a very long time to slow down enough to take in the dialog, which is in historic black vernacular, I grew to appreciate it.
But it's the narrative that totally awed me. The opening line:

Classic story, and a sad but sweet ending. I feel something more was missing, don't remember much from the movie, but I think the movie would be better!

Beautiful and bittersweet book. It takes a while to get started and follow the language and narration style, but once you get into it the book takes you on a journey of life. It takes you through a wide range of emotions and in the end brings a tear to your eye.
