This biography of Louis Zamparini has several things to recommend it.
Laura Hillenbrand's prose has the pacing of a novel. Perhaps that's because it's the subject is a hero but was also once a world-class athlete.

The author does a wonderful job showing the depths of cruelty people are capable of, as well as the inner strength of some when the victim of that cruelty.
I understand better now why so many Americans who lived through the War despised all things Japanese. I'm glad the author mentioned how conveniently the US government stopped its prosecution of war criminals when it was deemed necessary.
I did feel the author included so many details of Zamperini's young life almost as a possible explanation ...more
