I liked this book more than its predecessor, but that is not necessarily saying much.

Loved Elide (view spoiler), loved the witches, and generally enjoyed the action of the book.

I am so entirely over Aelin as a character, she is way too overpowered for me to really cheer for her earnestly, and I'm sick of how she can do no wrong. Rowan was fine in this one, I guess, but he's still barely a character outside of his constant pining for Ae 3.5/5

I am so entirely over Aelin as a character, she is way too overpowered for me to really cheer for her earnestly, and I'm sick of how she can do no wrong. Rowan was fine in this one, I guess, but he's still barely a character outside of his constant pining for Aelin. Aedion gets some development in this book and actually gets mad at "his queen" but then it's always immediately shown to be his fault, that he's wrong, etc. etc. I honestly hate how one-note everyone acts around the MAIN CHARACTER! Dorian is practically non-existent in this book - he's there, and he even fights, but he's usually just kind of sitting there, not doing or saying or thinking anything. He gets one or two cool moments where he sticks up for himself, and then the fae are up his ass about it. He's a king in his own right!

I also didn't care for the "big reveal" (view spoiler). I also didn't like how convoluted and yet impossibly convenient it was (view spoiler). There were so many other ways to make this impactful or to have a reveal that did not make my eyes roll so hard they practically left my head.

Also, I said I liked Elide, and I do, but the ending cliffhanger because of her was SO annoying to me. We are told multiple times in this book that she's crafty and smart, but she does the absolute stupidest thing ever at the end, and so does Aelin. JFC.

That said, I enjoyed the overall story because it was much less stuck on Aelin, which made it easier to hold my attention. I liked the inclusion of more fae, and the return of some pirates we met in a previous book. I liked the Infinity War-style "Avengers Assemble" type ending. I liked going to new places in the world, which helped it feel a little more full and less like there are only two places on the map.

It does seem like I was right that Chaol was written out of the story though, lmao.

There is no doubt that Sarah J Maas is the queen of fantasy! I loved this book so much it was exactly what I wanted it to be even if I cried five times at least before it ended!! I can't wait for the next one! Too bad we won't have it until September 2017!!
