The best thing about this book was finishing it. Unlikeable anti-hero, unremitting misery, no happy ending for any character, even the minor ones - this book made Russian literature seem cheerful in comparison. I might turn to Dostoevsky for some light relief. Well written prose, which is why I reluctantly gave it three stars.
