I enjoyed this book for its narrative. Ben Macintyre describes the entire lives of the main characters with skill and balance. The protagonists are fleshed out in detail, both their motivations and weaknesses. My issue with this book was not Macintyre's ability to craft an excellent historical account, because he demonstrates this ability throughout the book. Instead, my issue is with his subject matter. 3.5 stars. I liked it and felt that the characters of Philby and Elliott were well done. I guess I wanted to read more about the relationships with the other Cambridge traitors.
