I'd give it 3.5 stars, but that's not an option. This quick thriller has some nice ups and downs, but its origin as a screenplay is clear in its brevity. That brevity did not allow for the wonderful character insights and deeply moving prose Greene is best at. It was a good tale, and the film is supposed to be just as good or better. But it's another Greene novella accomplished, and more insight into the author. Check.

This is a brilliant book, despite being a treatsize to a film. It oozes that 50's film noir style and could easily be read again and again
