Hammond Innes was a thriller writer of the great British post-war generation, along with Desmond Bagley, Gavin Lyall and others. This is a salt-encrusted sea story, about a couple of British army enlisted men assigned to guard a shipment of silver being shipped to the U.K. from Murmansk on a creaky old freighter in the late days of the Second World War.
