Russia is flexing its muscles. It has annexed Crimea and is now putting the screws to the Ukraine. At the same time, Putin has again charged another billionaire industrialist with crimes, in a power play to probably get his company. The world may be on the brink of a new cold war. It is fertile ground for a top notch spy novelist.

Charles Cummings latest Thomas Kell spy novel (his second Kell spy book since A Foreign Country in 2012) is centered on Kell's investigation of the death of Paul Wallin

Continues the story of Thomas Kell and his boss, Amelia Levene. A good mole spy story between SIS and the cousins, but not as good as another country's exploitation of a long-lost son in A Foreign Country. The plot keeps you guessing, though I think the love interest with Rachel didn't seem necessary. ...more

Cumming is upping the ante in the second Kell-book, fleshing out what I perceived to be mere hints in the first. Cumming shows great command of the various locations, and takes the reader trough the twists and tunrs with panache.

My favorite of the Thomas Kell novels. Cummings does a good job analyzing the vagaries of treachery, which is at the heart what the best spy books are about.
