Rather slow,plodding character study. I feel like JLC was hedging his bets with this particular book as it seemed he he was reaching to a more "novel-like" approach but just fell short and too little of the Spy genre to fit his usual oeuvre. the book had it's thrilling moments but they were not enough to compel the story with his usual grace.

Le Carre portrays what rivalry can do. This book is about the military intelligence trying to revise its glory days during the war. The very opening of the book is an indication of how the military intelligence is no longer capable to mounting a good operation. Not because it failed, rather because the planning was so weak.
