First Hopkirk book I ever read, and got me hooked on his whole series of Central Asian histories. Fascinating in that they are all character driven -- and there's no more interesting cast of characters than all those 19th and early 20th century British explorers!

While I'm sure anyone interested could find a book covering the history of Tibet prior to entry by "Westernized" civilization, this book covered the period beginning with the first European explorers into Tibet. Thoroughly interesting read. The last few pages covering the more recent, sad, state dragged somewhat but this just may be due to the depressed status of Tibet itself.
