'A Divided Spy', the 3rd in Charles Cumming's Thomas Kell series, is the weakest of the group but is still a worthwhile spy thriller. It can be read as a standalone, but it helps to have consumed the first 2.
The story begins when Kell, still adrift since his previous adventures, is alerted to the presence at a resort of the Russian spy who was involved in the death of one of his previous close acquaintances. I enjoyed reading several prior novels by Charles Cumming, and find his stories and espionage thrillers some of the best writing in the modern genre. Unfortunately, the Thomas Kell character has gone stale IMO. Basically, it's the same formula. Kell is the discredited, jaded former SIS agent who "stumbles" into leads involving Russian plots, agents and terrorism. Thomas Kell seemed sloppy this time around. But depressing ending. I guess we'll see no more of Agent Kell.
