Really long, really boring, and REALLY could have done without the endless homoerotic overtones (including the graphic gay anal sex, which wasn't exactly an "overtone"...). If this is "literary" spy fiction, I'll stick to Fleming and other pulp. Apparently, this didn't fare much better with the critics than it did with me; TIME magazine noted that Mailer "runs into serious difficulty" in the areas of "suspense, characterization, dialogue and effective prose."
