This is an early Ross Thomas book, from 1967, apparently based on his experiences running a political campaign in Nigeria, though the country is given a fictional name and ambiguous location in the novel. (Thomas's extensive experience in journalism, PR and politics gave him abundant material for his novels, all of which involve corruption and skulduggery.)
