Running review.
Thirty pages in, I am enjoying this. Successfully takes one back to the time and place. Early 1950s - Vietnam, Colonialism. An English view of American character abroad. America exporting democracy into the end days of colonial failure and its vacuum of power struggles.
Eighty pages in, really enjoying this, though I'm seeing scenes and faces from the film adaptation. Excellent film, Michael Caine is superb as Thomas Fowler, but I would've preferred to read the book before seeing t ...more

This is the third time reading this novel, this time on audio. It is without question one of my favourite reads of all time. There are not many authors as good as Greene at capturing a specific time and place, The Quiet American being probably his best example.

Great book. Awesome writing from Greene. The dialogue, dripping in sarcasm, between Fowler and Pyle is fantastic. Am definitely going to have to start avoiding the films made out of great books (I'll have to continue to avoid seeing 'Brighton Rock' until I've read the book now).
