'Mexico Set', Len Deighton's 2nd in the Samson series, is another intricately plotted espionage story from the Cold War era, this time with Bernard Samson attempting to 'enroll' (entice to defect) his Russian counterpart. The Russian, a KGB guy, happens to work for Samson's wife, who defected in the opposite direction at the end of the initial installment in the series. Also involved is a dizzying array of spies on both sides and other characters, none of whom seem capable of telling the truth.

I'm a choosy espionage thriller reader, discarding about three quarters of the books I pick up before the halfway mark. I liked this book a lot, but didn't feel it was up to the standard set by "Berlin Game". Perhaps I judge Deighton too harshly: if "Mexico Set" had been written by a different author, I could have easily put five stars against it.
