As per usual with Le Carre, he is able to tell a story from two apparently unrelated stories, and bring them together and continue to a compelling finish. In fact, this is the triumphant finish of the Karla obsession Smiley has harbored his entire career - Karla, his Soviet counter-part, the mysterious head of the Moscow Center (13th Directorate), the spy who slipped from his grasp those many years ago in Delhi in India.

Here we are at the end of Smiley's career, the late 1970's - with a Labour
