Le Carré's work is very much a product of the Wilson/Heath/Callaghan/Thatcher years and the theme is the end of empire, the reduction of wartime heroics to small games for small stakes, played by hobbits like George Smiley. The central trilogy was tightly edited by Bob Gottlieb (but not too tightly - there are still adjectives, adverbs) to a level of unputdownable stickiness, perfect for long-haul plane trips and lost weekends.
