Shelves: re-read, fantasy

The Return of the King pulls all the threads still running from the previous volume and brings them together, first in the battle for Gondor and then the battle outside the Black Gates of Mordor.

It's always hard when you come to the end of such a long, involved story - I find there's always a feeling of dissatisfaction that the book has finished. The epic ending. Shorter than one might like, but the epic end to the true start of my favorite genre. It left me wanting so much more, that I became enamored with the entire fantasy genre.

This is Tolkien at the top of his game. With The Return of the King, Tolkien, using lessons learned when writing the first two-thirds of the tale no doubt, ingeniously uses his unique characters, unique geography, and unique story structure to create many incredibly powerful moments, one after another, leaving the reader breathless by the end.
