I particularly enjoyed the first half of this book - the action across Rohan, the descriptions of places, the introduction of new characters, developing of others and the unfolding of more events. I'm always amazed at how Tolkien managed to hold together so many threads of plot, even interlinking them at various points if only through a far of storm. And I much prefer the presentation of Faramir's character in the book than the film.

After The Fellowship of the Ring, Tolkien surprises the reader with The Two Towers, giving the plot a left turn and dramatically altering the way the tale is told from a story structure standpoint. But this isn't bad; it not only avoids having The Two Towers repeat the successes of The Fellowship of the Ring, it turns The Lord of the Rings into the greater story it is.
