The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien may have been origionally written with the target audience being that of children but regardless of whatever intentions it may have had Tolkien could not of predicted how this would change in so becoming a book that was and is still read and loved by not just children but teenagers and adults alike, becoming a universal publication that so many have enjoyed and delighted in. JRR Tolkien's creation of The Hobbit is a small piece in the jigsaw that is his outstanding creation of middle earth on which he spent his entire life designing and compiling, which had made him not only a literary genious by miles but someone whom had attempted and achived the impossible, that which most authors of today would not even begin to attempt or go into such detail. It was the fact that Tolkien went into so much background detail and history even with parts that are not necessarily seen within the novels (such as the hobbit, silmarillion and Lord of the Rings), that made his creation so utterly believable, realistic and hence why it will continue to be very much present for so many years to come. Not only am i truely astounded by the history and how not only middle earth came into being as well as fitting (and being structured) within history's timeline of events that of the real world hear and now, but how all of the themes and topics within the novels are so relevant to all society regardless of if it is the 1900's or 2012 we can all empathise and connect to the writing. The Hobbit is such a fabulous masterpiece that has been one of the most infulential books of our generation, as it covers all human emotion and meaning within life that touches ones very soul. The characters are utterly brilliant, destinctive and loveable and one cannot help but get wisked away into a whorlwind of dragons, elves, trolls and talking eagles that will delight and spark so much creativity within a childs imagination. Tolkien set out to achieve the blindingly impossible and he did not fail but triumphed spectacularly in his endeavours to create a legacy behind him of literary works of fiction, that which will be remembered for so many generations to come. ...more

Written for his sons, JRR Tolkien's "The Hobbit" is a delightful tale. It happens years before "The Lord of the Ring," and readers get to 1st discover the power of the one ring. ...more

The Hobbit is a great children's book that's complex enough for older readers to enjoy as well. It's not a "world in peril" epic tale like Tolkien's later works, but it has a charm of its own and has a good flow. ...more

Watched this on Jackonary when I was about 12 and had to read it. The Lord of the Rings and the Silmarillion followed...

I have just reread this old favourite and thoroughly enjoyed it. I was a bit hesitant as I'd had such good memories of it but I wasn't disappointed: I enjoyed the plot, the pace and the colour of the characters and scenery. ...more
