The Ghosts of Nagasaki was another surprising read which if not for GoodReads I would have never knew existed. It was nice to read something that felt like it had some substance to it. The story itself was interesting, bordering on odd. A man's search for his lost heart guided by ghosts (which aren't always exactly what you expect them to be) who are merely figments of his imagination or so they say. One of the really neat things about this book is that it can be read as a leisure read or it can be a more analytical read. It reminded me a bit of some books I read in high school with an almost too obvious theme, foreshadowing etc. The borderline over-use of symbolism is intriguing, funny and at times a bit annoying but I suppose to some extent necessary. The character's outside of the main one are delightful and I really enjoyed both his roommate the Welshman and his later reincarnate Mr. Sparkles (the bedazzled Welsh dragon who bums money, is a coward, drinks and smokes!). I did at times laugh out loud but when these colourful character's disappeared the main character's dialogue/the plot suffered. Too many I's, at times they bugged me. I believe the author did a magnificent job of capturing Japanese culture, social structure and beliefs. I could see the cherry blossom trees in the streets. For about a quarter of the book I was wondering if this was a frat boy college memoir of his trip to Japan with minor paranormal content thrown in. There was just so much drinking and streaking! The one thing I have to say was perfectly done (that's something coming from me) was the ending. The author knew when to end it and how to do it. VERY IMPRESSED! Some of the conclusions were predictable but other ones which you didn't see also came out and were very well implemented. Kudos to you on this as there are too many authors these days which bomb at the ending!
