Good historical novel about the Grinke sisters of Charleston, and their role in the fight for abolishing slavery during the late 1830's. Their plantation owning parents inflicted so much pain on the slaves, how could their daughters not recoil and reject this institution. It cost them dearly.

When I think of this book it will be of the slave Charlotte who I found the most compelling character. Definitely would recommend.

First, a clarification. I did not read this book, I listened to it and perhaps that is part of the reason I gave it the full 5* rating. The narrators were great! I liked the author's books in the past and this one did not disappoint. The audio version is 11 discs and I was actually sorry when I took disc #11 out of the case, knowing I was not going to be hearing these women for much longer. ...more

What you'd expect as description of life as a slave, interesting based on a true story tale of the southern young women who rejected slavery and worked for emancipation and women's rights. ...more

This author wrote a very caring version of such a trying time for the South. Her historical fiction was woven with both smiles and sadness but such a powerful ending.
