This is a beautiful yet painful story, and at some point in the novel you will cry real tears for these characters. Instead, I will share the lessons wrapped in the pages of this impressive, melancholy and loving debut novel.Ultimately, this is a story about the things we will do for love---the choices we make, the things we can not undo, the lives we alter and how fate knits itself into the seam

1. Did I like, identify with, and/or care about the main character(s)?
Yes. I was on everyone's side in this book. I loved each key player in the inter-family, small-town drama (including Septimus Potts) and I wanted each to have a happy ending (even though that seemed impossible).

It is not often that I give a book 5 stars but this one is very deserving. It's a well written and heart wrenching story. The character Frank's description of why we should forgive was a beautiful lesson. I love when a book teaches me new things while I'm being entertained.

If I could give it 3.5 stars, I would. The setting and time period were interesting, but I just couldn't connect with any of the characters. The first half of the book seemed to drag on and on. I found Isabel annoyingly selfish. I did shed a tear at the end though, it's rare for that to happen. Okay, maybe 3.75 stars...

Good book and great debut for the author. This book makes you think about a great many moral questions. And, mothers particularly will identify with aspects of both Hannah and Isabel. The book does drag at the end and there were a few pieces of the storyline I didn't believe. But, overall a really good read.
