I loved this book from the first few pages. It captures love, loss, regret, and redemption so beautifully. I will look forward to losing myself in its pages again.
This is a beautiful yet painful story, and at some point in the novel you will cry real tears for these characters. Enough has been written about the storyline of this book, so I will not bother with another summary. Yes. I was on everyone's side in this book. I loved each key player in the inter-family, small-town drama (including Septimus Potts) and I wanted each to have a happy ending (even though that seemed impossible).

It is not often that I give a book 5 stars but this one is very deserving. It's a well written and heart wrenching story. The character Frank's description of why we should forgive was a beautiful lesson. I love when a book teaches me new things while I'm being entertained.

Nothing short of a treasure. This novel--its setting, characters, lyrical prose--crept into my heart, where it will remain forever.

The prose is beautiful but the plot seems to be contrived in places and a little predictable. The characters got on my nerves though, and I was very frustrated with them. I was totally surprised by the ending, which was not an ending at all, but another beginning. Is there a sequel planned?
This book was very compelling. I loved the characters and the story! It showed how wonderful and difficult life can be; especially by the choices we make!
If I could give it 3.5 stars, I would. The setting and time period were interesting, but I just couldn't connect with any of the characters. The first half of the book seemed to drag on and on. I found Isabel annoyingly selfish. I did shed a tear at the end though, it's rare for that to happen. Okay, maybe 3.75 stars...

Good book and great debut for the author. This book makes you think about a great many moral questions. And, mothers particularly will identify with aspects of both Hannah and Isabel. The book does drag at the end and there were a few pieces of the storyline I didn't believe. But, overall a really good read.
