A touching fantasy that hits a high note

I simply loved this story. The romance between Elyne and Derron was both touching and heart-warming (and well deserved). The world Miles built is engaging, and beckons you in. Once there, I promise you won't want to leave. She managed to weave all my favorite fantasy elements--from elves to dark magic to dragons--artfully into the story that builds tension with each turn of the page, leading up to what promises to be an epic war. Since the prologue introduces Kieran, and his reasons seem plausible, I thought he was the hero, despite his evil act. The few scenes with Kieran in the rest of the book seemed the most lively. Queen Maeve is so unsympathetic, I couldn’t blame Kieran for wanting to destroy her. Her treatment of Elyne is unsupportable and Derron’s reasons for helping Elyne are poorly explained, both to the reader and to Elyne.
