Scholars chose this book to compliment "Othello" and themes of Othering, or objectifying and demeaning another in order to feel superior or to abuse that other race, religion, sex or class. This, like "A Child Called It", by David Pelzer, is an essential read for young and old alike. Pelzer's sequels are "The Lost Boy" and "A Man Named Dave".

Maleeka Madison is often told that she is too black. Why does skin color matter? The Skin I'm In tells the story of a young girl in junior high school who deals with the problem of trying to get people to respect her and like her. the only problem is she doesn't even like or respect herself. Maleeka has to realize that what people think is not always right and true.A new English teacher who has dealt with the same problem comes to work at Maleekas school. The Skin I'm In is a good book because t

From this book I learned to appreciate my self for who I am. I learned that its important to love your self . In life people my make fun of you especially your peers. But its important to keep your head up and have a high self-esteem about your self. I also learned that its not good to be something that your not just to please others. I they don’t take you for who you are then they’re not worth being your friend.

Dear sharon G. Flake,
I like the way you write the book in the eyes of Meleeka's perception of everything that is happening to her. Your book is full of messages about uplifting yourself because of the constant struggle with self esteem problems, so far this book is great only a few more pages to go. ...more

The book,"Skin I'm In" is a very tough book. Everyone should read it, teens and even children as well. It is about this girl named Maleeka who is in middle school and faces teases every morning till afternoon. She couldn't accept the fact that she is beautiful while she is dark skinned. Things get crazier for Maleeka when she faces a teacher named Miss. Saunders who does not exactly have an attractive look. But the difference between Maleeka and the teacher is that Miss. Saunders who is very sel

I was assigned to read this book in seventh grade and I found it to be real good. It deals with several modern and common issues such as racism, peer pressure and redemption. Maleeka the main character has really dark skin. Due to this she is ridiculed all throughout the book and doesn’t love herself. Peer pressure because she was led astray by bad friends just because she wanted to be popular. Redemption because in the end she does something that she needs to be forgiven for. This book is excel

I personally really like this book because it can actually teach someone that they should be proud of their skin color and who they are. I liked this book beginning to end. There is also this one teacher who changes Maleeka's opinion about her skin color. Maleeka also had friends that really were not her friends just some girls who needed her to do her homework. Maleeka did not like the teacher at first but did she realize this woman could change her life? I guess you will have to read to find

This book is the story of a seventh grader named Maleeka. Maleeka has very dark black skin. She used to be proud of it, but when her fahter died, kids started picking on her. Char, the most popular girl in the grade, makes a deal with Maleeka that if she does her home work, Char will stick up for her, and Maleeka can hang out with her. A new teacher arrives, Miss Saunders. She also gets made fun of because she has a big blotch on her face, which is a birth mark.

I personally could relate to this book somewhat because I've been around girls unsatisfied with their skin color as well. Melika was a young girl who didn't like her outside shell. I found this book to be one of the greatest books ever written because I think a good book is one that you can relate to the most. This book can be relatable for many young girls across America, even the ones that are not of the Black race.

This book is extremely vivid. It portrayes the view of girls today, especially that of African American teenagers. I'm a fourteen-year old girl, so i can relate to her in some ways that i cannot relate to characters in classics. This book, i feel, was made for me. The feelings of the character become my own, and i really feel as though I was there. I've read many books, and this is one of the ultimate favorite!!!!

So much hate one can have to try to change who they really are because no one else likes what they see. As I read this book it opened up my eyes on how the world is truly no matter what age group you are in. This book really touched me. One thing I learned in this book is if you can’t love yourself no one else can, hope you enjoy.
I am usually not fascinated with more raw novels like Sharon G. Flakes' The Skin I'm In, but it has trully grasped my full attention. My mother and I both read this book together; she reads
one page and I read the the other. This book helps us to expand our minds while also letting us have a special bond one hour out of each day. We both enjoy this book very much and when we are finished with it we are going to explore more of Mrs. Flakes novel's. ...more
