"The Crucible" by Arthur Miller is a play set in a town called Salem in 1692. There has been a series of witchcraft incidents, which are punishable by death, unless one confesses. Everyone is very quick to judge, so the community gains distance in one another's trust. When Betty, Reverend Parris' daughter is sick due to witchcraft, the community begins to suspect Parris and his family. When Parris asks his niece, Abigail Williams, about performing any witchcraft, she denies everything and says t ...more

Arthur Miller illustrates a story of two worlds in his allegorical play, "The Crucible". Miller used theme and conflict to mirror his experience during McCarthyism and the Red Scare in the 1950s to the Witch Trials of the 1600s. The detailed characterization allows the reader to view the hypocrisy and opposing sacrifice created in a paradoxical Puritan society. The controversy of the witch trials was equivalent to the paranoia of Communism in the United States because these were both ideas that ...more

"The Crucible" touches upon many important points about society. The main theme of the book is "othering", or exclusion of a certain peoples based on ageism, sexism, racism, their beliefs or their culture. What makes this book particularly interesting is the fact that the ideas in the play can be applied to today, or any other situation. Arthur Miller wrote this play during a time when he was "othered" under the principle of McCarthyism. Some of the events actually cause the the reader to stir i ...more

The Crucible by Arthur Miller is an excellent play written to depict the contraditions of Puritan Society in Massachusetts, 1692. The play is about the occurence of the Salem Witch Trials that executed 19 innocent people who were convicted of witchcraft based on false accusations by young teenaged girls. The main themes that emerge throughout the story include fear, paranoia, and religion. Miller's characters are brought to life with characterization paragraphs that help the reader to understand ...more

The Crucible is a great book. It is a Puritan community that believes that some of the inhabitants are practicing witchcraft. They come to this conclusion because of an unusual illness that has fallen upon two children. These two actions led to a chain reaction of events. The inhabitants began to blame and accused others of practicing witchcraft for personal reasons. These events sends the perfect community into an anarchy and confusion. This book has a lot of suspence and excitment. It will wil ...more

Arthur Miller uses the book as an allegory to the McCarthy Era. This novel gave me a lot of knowledge about the lives of the people during colonial society. Certain people were accused of witch craft and i found it very depressing. Many innocent lives were killed but this did not stop the search of witches even though they did not exist. The McCarthy Era was similar in a way because it was an era of Anti-Communists. This book started to get a bit boring towards the end so that's why i rated it w ...more

The crucible is an interesting book. It describes the Puritan city of Salem and the people. It is an allegory which was written in the McCarthy era. The characters in this book are similar to the people who existed during the McCarthy era. Things got worse when Abigail and Betty Williams were accused of performing witchcraft. In the Puritan society, if the people violated any law, they were accused of being witches and were ultimately killed. At some points, the book got boring and confusing. Bu ...more

The play "The Crucible" by Arthur Miller was about a puritan society that were going through a lot of changes. There were people being othered of witchcraft and many lies were going around, which is not normal in a Puritan society. There is lust going around, between a young girl and an older man. I thought this play was great, but I just didn't like the ending. I understood it but the girls in the story were getting me mad in real life. I would reccomend this book to people who enjoy reading ab ...more

At first glance The Crucible may seem very dull and boring. However, as you start to read continuously, and get into the plot your whole attitude towards the book changes. The fact that this novel is based on true events with a few minor changes, makes it even more intriguing. It is filled with paradoxes, jealousy, lies, lust, and “sins”, which contribute to its suspense filled plot. This novel is ideal for everyone in high school, especially if you are learning about colonial America.

This book, although assigned to read, was pretty good. It reminded me of Animal Farm because it was portraying real events that happened years ago. It's amazing just how much drama was caused by the happenings during this time. Along with that, a drop of betrayal here and there, some sexuality, a dash of hysteria, and sprinkled on top were accusations and confessions. Just...a LOT. It's amazing how much this book had in it's few pages. It wasn't my typical choice of reading, but I enjoyed it. ...more

The crucible is a backup story on communist times. I felt this book to be okay when it was court trials. If the way it was written changed to a modern day, I think it'll attract more readers. In Salem, things aren't what they're meant to be. Puritans were a group of people who wanted to separate themselves from England's Church and being the saved ones. Yet, they're doing things that they're not suppose to do. Such that having John create a crime, which was adultery. ...more

Arthur Miller's The Crucible tells the story of the Massachusetts Bay Colony during the Salem Witch Trials. The story begins with a frantic Reverend Parris pacing through his daughter's room because she is believed to be hexed. Witchcraft, one of the main conflicts, causes paranoia and dissension in the colony. Slowly but surely, characters start turning on each other playing a game of he said- she said so that no one takes their own responsibility and/ or suffer the consequences of their action ...more

"The Crucible" was a bit hard for me to read becauase the language is different form what I'm used to. I did find the fact that it was about witchcraft and how lying can lead to a huge ordeal in one community. We also briefly worked in McCarthyism and how it related to the Crucible too. I feel like Arthur Miller was very smart on how he used both different topics and incorporated it into one story. Artur Miller also did a great job on putting emphasis in othering people and how it changes people ...more

The Crucible, by Arthur Miller is an allegory using the time period of 1492 Salem Witch trials to portray the events during the Red Scare. I suggest this book though at first it seemed boring, the story certainly has a twist, its a mystery we know the answer to but the others in the story don't. The Crucible contains many themes liek scapegoats and othering to show how all these played a role in intiatiaitng the salem witch trials. ...more

The Crucible is a very will established play written in 1953, by Arthur Miller.
The play is an allegory of McCarthyism during 1950's in America. This play gave me a better understanding of Puritan society, and the nature of paradox playing a role in society. Characters in the book ostracized each other,by accusing people of doing witchcraft in Salem, Massachusetts. It made me think more in depth, how harsh human beings can be to each other. Aside from alll the good aspects of the play, the book u

Arthur Miller's play depicts how "othering" can destroy the structure of a community. Miller’s play shows how trying to create an organization for people can isolate others. This story of an event that occurred in the colonial America period is similar to the 1950s practice of McCarthyism. It is similar in how people started turn against each other when they should be in a Utopian society. ...more

I thought that the play was a good read but as I was assigned it, it felt forced at first. Once you get into the main plot of the story, you get this sense that you dont want to put the book down. Boring at first and interesting at the middle and end

I though that the play "The Crucible" was very interesting. The play's plot was very interesting and the setting made it better. The idea of comparing two different time period to each other was kind of thrilling. The play shows many factors like othering and scapegoat which still exists in our society. In the play the opinion on how a person views a character is erratic; Proctor, a farmer who has a lead role in the play seems to be portrayed as a sinner at times and saint in the end. overall I ...more

The Crucible was an amazing play. I loved how little rumors grew into big altercations. I love and hate how difference can cause such a big drama. i dislike how the women were such huge instigators. Overall, great book i recommend to many people :)

This book is crazy. I was glued to it from the first day I began reading it. Manipulation leds to many distruction and misunderstanding. Many different themes and literary elements; the theme of othering, discovery and manipulation is best showen in the play. Putting together two main historical events together The Salem Witchcraft Trials of 1692 and the McCarthyism. The author compares different characters with McCarthy.
