“Life is not a PG feel-good movie. Real life often ends badly. Literature tries to document this reality, while showing us it is still possible for us to endure nobly.”

Hands down the best novel I have read throughout 2012.
In a year where I have been reading magical realism/fantasy/sci-fi novels mostly, Silver Linings Playbook seemed to be a depressing read (since it deals with real life which isn't always fun) but I was proven completely wrong in the end. The story revolves around Pat, a 34 year old guy who has just left a mental institution and is trying assimilate back into our supposedly 'sane' society, and in the process he tries his best to stick to his ...more

If I had high expectations about this one it surely surpassed them!
It has a little less sugar than the movie, and Pat's journey is more about accepting that life is not a movie and bad things happen, but the more depressing "truths" really make the book an extraordinary read. First of all it explains a lot, for example why Tiffany found closure for her husband's death by sleeping with every man she could get her eyes on (there's actually a meaningful reason for it).

This is one of those stories that touch on a very sensitive topic: mental illnesses and how people cope with it.
It's ironic that sometimes those who have something wrong with their marbles are the one who observe the most in their everyday life. They're the ones who reflect most of the time. And we see here that even though the protagonist is the one with the mental illness, he's not the one who acts wrong most of the time. Not like his father, who bases how he treats his family on how his favo ...more

Very different than the movie but equally as enchanting! The novel focuses more on Pat's relationships between himself/his family and himself/reality. Told through his point of view, his voice is endearing, realistic, and easy to empathize with. Breezed right through it!
