While the above description suggests, misleadingly, that all of protagonist David Balfour's adventures take place on the "high seas" (he only gets as far as the treacherous coastal waters of his native Scotland, and the great majority of the story takes place on land), the rest of it is pretty apt. Kidnapped is a fun and exciting read; one that works on many levels. The main character, David Balfour, tells his own story of coming of age as a strong, impressionable young orphan. Its a tale of shipwreck and trekking across the Scottish highlands; one that paints an informative picture of Scotland's culture, geography and people. Much of the dialogue is written in the Scottish brogue and those passages went slower. But it was worth it.
