It has been a while since I read a Georgette Heyer book. I had forgotten what delight they are.
This one focused more on a mystery and less on a romance, but both elements are there.
One dark, rainy night, Captain John Staple comes across a scared young boy manning the toll gate. The boy's father has disappeared and he is clearly terrified. The captain stays the night and then continues to stay on to care for the lad and discover what has become of the father.

A mystery with a little romance thrown in for good measure. I enjoyed it. 3.5 stars.
I enjoyed this one! I liked the mystery, I liked the length.
The only reason I knock it down one-star is that the 'romance' between John and Nell was non-existent and them marrying after knowing one another three days is a little ... odd.
Other than that, I enjoyed it and I can't wait to read my next Heyer book! ...more

There is certainly some of Heyer's trademark humor and a great deal of cant. And although there is the tiniest bit of romance this is mostly a mystery with something of a havey-cavey ending.
