Patrick Hamilton, 1945 by Bill Brandt Copyright Bill Brandt archive The novelist and playwright Patrick Hamilton (1904-1962) was commemorated with an English Heritage blue plaque in celebration of his life and contribution to literature. The plaque was installed at 2 Burlington Gardens, Chiswick, W4 on Saturday 12th February, 2011. Patrick Hamilton Patrick Hamilton was one of the most gifted and admired writers of his generation. Born Anthony Walter Patrick Hamilton in the Sussex village of Hassocks, in 1904, he and his parents moved to 12 First Avenue, Hove, when Patrick was four, and this house is where he spent his early years. Patrick Hamilton's childhood home is situated near the bottom, at the the southerly end, of First Avenue. His house, number 12, is the last yellow brick house before a row of houses painted cream. First Avenue ends opposite Hove seafront. Patrick Hamilton achieved early success as a novelist and playwright, his first novel published in his early twenties. He wrote several other novels and a play, Rope, before he was thirty. Both Rope and another play, Gaslight, were adapted for the big screen, the former by Alfred Hitchcock. His novels include Craven House, The Midnight Bell, The Siege of Pleasure, The Plains of Cement (a trilogy later published together under the title Twenty Thousand Streets Under the Sky), Hangover Square and The Slaves of Solitude, and The West Pier (described by Graham Greene as the best book ever written about Brighton and Hove). Patrick died in 1962, aged fifty-eight, alcoholism undoubtedly a factor in his early death. 12 First Avenue, Hove, East Sussex, England is marked by a blue plaque that was paid for by Penguin Books.
