I was just saying that we can't expect to be trusted, just like that, and that we shouldn't let a little "lumping in" easily offend us.
Dear Carol, Although I understand what you're saying, I think you should reconsider. I made a similar statement to yours many years ago in a Black history class in College. I lived to regret it.
It's true that our white race has never stopped hunting and killing the Native Americans just as it has never stopped hunting down the runaway black slaves. It has never stopped humiliating the Chinese railroad worker. The list goes on.
Many Native Americans were hunted to extinction. Many others are near extinction. This is not a personal thing. The United States is a nation built upon greed and abuse and violence. Maybe God will forgive us, but let's not tell the Native Americans to forgive us.
I read Tracks by Louise Erdrich 1st, followed by Four Souls, which seems like a sequel to it, but at some point it's so fun to read The Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse. I didn't like Love Medicine as well as many people did. Tracks is a great beginning.
It'd be nice if we could get along while maintaining unique cultures. But the business man will make all the world the same if he has his way - if the world can survive in spite of him.Still, i don't see how we can stand in the way of love.
I'm a Louise Erdrich fan for some time now. She's an influence for me. I also like N. Scott Momaday. Very poetic style, it seems, but then I've only read House Made of Dawn. Still it had an effect on my own writing.
