It was also really tame in the romance department with no more than kissing so you weren't missing much between Lucy and the Cap.
I've got three more to go. I determined to finish this one!49/52 as of 10/25/19

I read The Ghost and Mrs. Muir by Josephine Leslie writing a R.A. Dick. I rated it *4 STARS*This isn't a book that I would typically read but I needed it for another challenge and it fit with this theme so I thought it was meant to be. It was a quite an unusual love story and the first time that I read a book that had a ghost as a main character.
However, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I definitely feel like I would read something else by this author. I listened to it on audio and thought the narrator did a masterful job!
I also used this for PnM: Publication
Nominate shelf: Kick-ass Heroines
If anyone like cozy mysteries the Lillian Byrd series features a lesbian reporter/detective. Holy Hell is the first book and they are on KU. I quite enjoyed the series.
I read Sula by Toni Morrison on 9/23/19 and rated it *3 STARS*.Man this was dark and depressing. I have to admit that I haven't read Toni Morrison before. That is a failing on my part. She captured the desolation of the time period. The way the hopefulness of youth can be stamped out so easily by oppression.
I wish we had gotten more of what Nel and Sula were up to during their times apart. I felt like there was something fundamental that was missed there. There was something seriously wrong with Sula. She was broken. And she had no problem letting that brokenness infect others did she?
I felt so raw after finishing this. I felt like so much was left unfinished. I didn't feel any hope and just Nel's realization at the end made it that much more worse.
But damn if it didn't have me thinking. I know that this story will stick with me for a while. And ultimately I know I'll have to delve into more of this author's work.

I have a question. i have book on my shelf labeled "Southern-Gothic" and "American-Gothic" but not plain "Gothic". Will that work for this month?

I read When Dimple Met Rishi which was shelved as Asia a few times. I rated it *4 STARS* The book was set in the US but I think because it was dealing with Southeast Asian characters it was shelved that way.I really enjoyed it though. I don't read a lot of YA but this one really made me rethink that. The characters were nuanced, their stressors weren't necessarily unique to their culture but definitely affected them in a different way because they were American born children with their Indian culture dictating a lot of their choices.
I thought it was interesting how all Rishi was and how totally against everything Dimple was. By the end of the book I think they both found out some very significant things about themselves but also found new respect for the parents they thought they had figured out.
This book was so well written I was just immersed in the trials and tribulations of this couple. I laughed, I cried, I wanted to shake them at some point. But more than anything I just enjoyed the story and felt like I was drawn in.
I think this book really highlighted the fact that we need more "own voices" books. We need more mainstream books to highlight our diversity. And I really think we need it now more than ever.
