80482 Philip José Farmer's The Dungeon is a focus, but he inspired/edited that rather than contribute. Anyway, any of his work is fair game too.

80482 Focus on KEW's Kane, but other Wagner works are fair game.

80482 June 2020 had a new Sword & Sorcery e-zine emerge.

https://whetstonemag.blogspot.com/

Issue one online as a PDF

WHETSTONE is an amateur magazine that seeks to discover, inspire, and publish emerging authors who are enthusiastic about the tradition of “pulp sword and sorcery.” Writers in this tradition include (but are not limited to) the following: Robert E. Howard, Fritz Leiber, Jack Vance, Michael Moorcock, Karl Edward Wagner, David C. Smith, and many more. “Pulp sword and sorcery” emphasizes active protagonists, supernatural menaces, and preindustrial (mostly ancient and medieval) settings. Some “pulp sword and sorcery” straddles the line between historical and fantasy fiction; at Whetstone, however, we emphatically prefer “secondary world settings,” other worlds liberated from the necessity of historical accuracy.

About the editor: Dr. Jason Ray Carney is a lecturer in the Department of English of Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia. He is the co-editor of the academic journal The Dark Man: Journal of Robert E. Howard and Pulp Studies and the area chair of the "Pulp Studies" section of the Popular Culture Association. He serves as the Academic Coordinator for the Robert E. Howard Foundation.

80482 Aug 3rd, copied from a public comment from author Steven Dilk's facebook:

"Update: FLASHING SWORDS! # 6.
A deal has been struck between the publisher and the writers.
Bob McLain, who runs Pulp Hero Press, e-mailed us all this morning with an outline to pay all parties involved for their work. While FLASHING SWORDS! # 6 has been pulled for good and editor Robert M. Price effectively fired, Bob has offered a placement in a new anthology to be published at a later date. All those that want to withdraw their stories have been offered a kill fee for their time. Bob admitted mistakes were made and has done his best to find a resolution."

80482 Nice commentary from Brian Murphy, a Pulp Hero Press author:
https://thesilverkey.blogspot.com/202...

Brian Murphy notes, quite rightly, that the introduction would have been a fine opportunity to honor Lin Carter's contributions.... which echoes Joy's comments above.

80482 @Clint, was on Facebook yesterday...need to avoid that for a day. But I admit to checking in on occasion. Most of the comment(s) in the groups I follow have been turned off.

@Joy, nice counterpoint.

Narrated by the hauntingly beautiful Kathy Bell Denton
"... a post-apocalyptic sort of fantasy world where the 'good' guys are undead necromancers and hybrid monsters, the remaining humans must make difficult choices to ensure that there's a future for any of them." - Bob Milne Beauty in Ruins

"Helen is one of the stranger heroes to feature in swords & sorcery. Is she delusional, mad, gifted? I was never quite sure — she is only a little girl — but I was never able to take my eyes off her. With a cast as strange as this novel has, Helen remains the focus throughout. Even when she’s off stage, the question of what she is doing always seems to rise to the fore." - Fletcher Vredenburgh from Black Gate

Contributor Adrian Cole chimed in another FB group (Sword and Sorcery and fantasy Forum) to say the Pulp Hero Press is delisting now and has hopes to re-release. Lots of work for a small press to go thru to cover up this debacle.

80482 I'll preface this by a note that this forum is not a place to stir up extra drama.

I was about to help spread the word about Flashing Swords #6, since Robert Price (editor) and Pulp Hero Press were reviving the Sword & Sorcery series this month.

However, several authors and friends appear in this...or were going to....but the book will likely be pulled just as it begins to be released.

So this is the nutty story:

In short, the editor wrote a controversial, irrelevant political rant as an introduction. So many authors are pulling their stories from this version. I suspect that Pulp Hero Press may find a way to release it again.

So...do not expect it to be released in 2020. Or rather, expect the release to be a mess.

I learned about this madness via Black Gate editor John O'Neill's Facebook page. He pointed folks to a BleedingCool website that explains more: https://bleedingcool.com/comics/autho...

Feel welcome to read that link, which includes a snapshot of the weird introduction...but to reiterate, there is no need to bring any drama here. We can collectively sigh that a promising anthology has been derailed for a bizarre reason.
80482 Nice review Clint. Thanks for sharing.

80482 Cripes, the Goodreads Interface and I are wrestling, and I am losing.

Once a day I am allowed to send a broadcast email, and in trying to incorporate the link to the new poll .... it fired prematurely. Whatever.
So that'll look like spam.

Also, the "widget" for embedding the Poll HTML has worked poorly for years now...but it would have been nice to write something.

So I'll just work with archaic HTML code to provide a link here:

Thanks to L.D., Stan, Joe, Clint, Steve, Briam, Joy, etc....for the ideas (taken from various discussions)
