80482 Share the books that got you hooked into Sword & Sorcery. Even better, re-read them, and see if they hold-up-to-time or evoke fond memories.

Better yet...review them, since chance are you were not reviewing books as a child/teen!

Sorry 2020 was sh!tshow for you (and most of the world).

I'm interested in these, though my turn around time sucks. I'll send you a PM.

80482 btw, I jealous of you Deluxe N owners.

80482 I accidentally received an extra copy of Tales From The Magician's Skull #5. Anyone in the US want it? I can send it if I get a post address (sending international isn't cost effective).

80482 Joseph, you have the Deluxe edition? I think Jason Waltz did. I'm waiting on the standard one.

80482 Time to gear up for the next group-read.

We are now polling for group-read topics for March-April. Please write in your ideas. Usually, top two topics get a spotlight.

80482 Sometime Lofty Towers by David C. Smith just released!

Sometime Lofty Towers by David C. Smith

“This Will Be a Quick War”
Twenty years ago, Hanlin and Thorem fought side by side as mercenaries in the Border Wars, hired by rich landowners and the settled business interests to push the western frontier farther into lands held by the westlings—the kirangee, the People, who have lived there for untold generations.

Now the business interests intend to encroach still farther on the territory held by the People. Hired by the wealthy Lady Sil of Tidon to assist in this enterprise, Thorem cannot convince Hanlin to join him on another campaign. Following the earlier battles, Hanlin had gone to live with the kirangee, learned some of their ways, married a kirangia woman—and has no interest in making war against them again.

But Hanlin’s and Thorem’s destinies will nevertheless become entangled once more as both are drawn back to the frontier that saw their earlier glories—and failures.

David C. Smith, recognized for a career spent writing sword-and-sorcery and weird fiction, here offers an insightful, often brutal modern novel that vividly brings to life the ferocious wills and dark hearts of the skilled mercenaries and the redoubtable kirangee. The People will raise the sorcery of their ancestors to defend their land at all costs, but Lady Sil will not be deterred, for as Thorem tells his old friend, “As mothers breed sons, the sons breed war.”

I was eyeing Eda Blessed: A Ki Khanga Adventure as well...since it seems "darker" and the sequel is coming soon.

80482 That's an excellent question. Worthy of pinging Milton too.

@Greg, @Steve,
It is oddly refreshing to hear others' candid impression on "Ghor." With the list of authors combined with extending REH's character, it is certainly a huge draw for aficionados. At least those who track it down will know what they are getting into. Thx for sharing.

and @Jason, lol. even more candid feedback! That one was pretty low on the TBR....will likely stay buried.

80482 Over in the Currently Reading thread, the classic Ghor, Kin Slayer: The Saga Of Genseric's Fifth Born Son came up. I tried to redirect conversation here, since it is (by most definitions) an Anthology.

I supply my review to Ghor that explains why it soured for me. (https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...).

My key response: "Actually, the first few tales had me hooked. Then I came upon Michael Moorcock's contribution and couldn't get over his over-the-top, misogynistic introduction of the female Shanara. I was really disappointed in this, since it poisoned the tone of the subsequent chapters…and I had expected more professionalism and better style from the creator of Elric (in which he better balanced violence/weirdness/machismo). But the collection serves as a great sampling of legendary authors. Get it for historical interest if nothing else"

How so? Just curious. Haven't read it."

@Jason, At risk of hijacking the Currently Reading topic, I divert to another thread.

Ghor deserves its own topic, or we could just tap into the ongoing Anthology Groupread one:
