80482 Recently finished Gerald W. Page and Hank Reinhardt's Heroic Fantasy, and my opinion is that you can either seek out this excellent collection, or you can skip a step and go right to the authors and their series: Adrian Cole's The Voidal, Tanith Lee's Cyrion, E.C. Tubb's Malkar (Did you know he wrote sword and sorcery? I didn't), Charles Saunder's Imaro, Darrell Schweitzer, F. Paul Wilson, Don Walsh, and so forth. This book is a gateway drug to more to-read items.

His Fell Cargo was excellent, if you can find it.

80482 Just finished Bauchelain and Korbal Broach, set within Steven Erikson's Malazan Empire. Highly recommended, but has a dark comic tone that may not be to all tastes.

80482 Has anyone read beyond the first book in The Birthgrave series?

Good to know! Thanks!

80482 Has anyone read far into the Tales from the Flat Earth series? I just finished Night's Master and thought it was excellent...

Thank you!

80482 It never held together: there were too many cases where characters had to ignore the obvious or unreasonably delay action in order for events to progress as they did. I kept asking myself "why haven't these idiots been caught yet?"

80482 Gave The Weight of Blood a read, but was very unimpressed. Ratings trend higher than mine, and the Kindle version is free.

80482 Are we counting Kobolds?

80482 How would this august assembly categorize kobolds in this discussion? Orc, Goblin, or "Get out of here, vermin"?

80482 Has anyone else here run across "The Brazen Peacock" in their reading? It was never published during REH's lifetime, and has only appeared in a few places, in particular Swords of Shahrazar, where I encountered it this month.

It's not very noteworthy in itself--a secret city of evil, a greedy idiot who doesn't understand the importance of not blackmailing a death cult, and a strong-thewed, whalebone-and-steel-spring hero to set matters right--but it has an intersection with world current events. REH had taken a real religious/ethnic sect and menaced it up into a cult of vicious devil-worshipers, borrowing their name, city, and religious imagery for the story.

That group is the Yazidi, of northern Iraq, who recently have come under attack by Al-Qaeda separatists, and who have historically been characterized as devil-worshipers.

I'll save you some time: It doesn't improve.

Coincidence! My copy of The Book of Morgaine arrived today.

80482 Jason beat me to Silverglass, but hopefully I'll cover new ground with God Stalk.

80482 For those who are interested, I've reviewed Master of the Etrax by Robert Lory.

(In brief: if you like Cugel the Clever, read Cugel the Clever instead.)

80482 Hello, all. I'm Derek and I've been quietly lurking in the group for entirely too long.

I'm a fan of really obscure, little-known fantasy works, and am looking forward to the September/October group read.
