Halfway through Natural Causesby James Oswald. It's the first in a new series, and quite good so far. Feeds my crime love!
I also had really high hopes for Bernard and thought he might break away from the whole system but he really disappointed me with his treatment of John. He is clearly a hypocrite and doesn't care about his previous issues when surrounded by women, getting the attention he feels he deserves having been dealt the Alpha "short" straw.
Sorry I'm a bit late to the discussion! This was the first time I've read this book, although I've wanted to read it for a while. I loved the tour in the beginning chapters, it was so disturbing to see the levels they are going to for human manipulation.
Hi everyone, I absolutely loved this book! I really enjoyed the flashback story and like Abi, I was reading it on my Kindle and I did the same thing (looking forward a bit to check there wasn't an error!) It was a completely different story and I think that's why I enjoyed the book so much. It was great to get two such different narratives and then have them knitted together at the end.
Hi everyone, I'm a bit of a blogging virgin but I am loving it so far and can't imagine my life before blogging. (joke) Here's my blog if anyone wants to take a look:http://www.bibliobeth.wordpress.com
Hi everyone, I've loved reading all your comments and it definitely made me think about the book in more depth. This is a strange one for me as I read it about ten years ago when it was first published and didn't think much of it at all. Re-reading it I loved it! This is the first time something like that has happened to me.I loved the zoo and animal references in the beginning of the book (in particular referring to the sloth who has a "good-natured smile.") Picturing it just makes me laugh. I was also very intrigued and enjoyed reading and learning a little about the different religions Pi subscribed to. And part two, all I can say is wow. I prefer to believe the animal story but I loved that Martel allowed us to make up our own minds. I also posted a review on my blog if anyone wants to check it out - http://www.bibliobeth.wordpress.com
Thanks guys for a brilliant discussion.
I agree, that's a great quote. I think Martel is leaving the reader to make up their own mind also, as all religions could be seen as "stories," its just a mattter of which story you choose to believe.
The part about RP's faeces was absolutely disgusting and I think Pi was getting so desperate at this point he would do anything for a bit of "nourishment" (?) I think this is also the part where he loses touch with reality a bit although the other blind man completely confused me to begin with!
I am a big animal lover so I really enjoyed this part of the book. And yes, the hyena definitely got what was coming to him! (shudders)
I also loved the scene with the three wise men. It really made me smile when they were all insulting each others religions, and poor Pi as has been said before, is the youngest but wisest of the lot.
This is a re-read for me also, I read it about ten years ago when it first came out and I wasn't impressed at all but thought I would give it another go. I am SO glad I did! This time round, I am absolutely loving it! Its been such a turn around for me, I can hardly believe it. I also found the zoo/religion parts very interesting, and some parts made me chuckle. The thought of a sloth being described as having a good-natured expression on its face is just too funny.
