I need help! (22 new)

78394 I liked a Woman in White as suggested by Shannon, and Rebecca is a good read - both have a bit of classical gothic mystery in them. I thought Crime and Punishment was a fabulous read. That one stuck with me for quite awhile afterward. Happy Reading!
78394 I just finished The Swan Thieves and really enjoyed it. I also agree with Bianca (#6) - loved the Book Thief and Shadow of the Wind.

78394 I'm reading Walking the Camino and House of the Dead by Dostoyevsky. A lot of you are reading A Study in Scarlet so I might give that one a go next.

I Quit! (62 new)
Feb 14, 2013 03:17AM

78394 I've given myself permission to quit a book just within the last couple of years. Like Inge said, life is too short for a bad book.

I will quit when the reading gets immorally questionable (for me) or if I haven't been able to grasp the story (or care) within a few chapters. I have done my share of skimming, trying to hang onto a book that I should have given up on hours before!

I'd be interested in re-reading The Ultimate Hitchhikers Guide and continuing on with the series. I found that the local library seemed to carry them or I could order it in. Would you like to give that a go?

Monster Reads (72 new)
Feb 14, 2013 02:45AM

78394 My first required reading monster book was Roots and that was fantastic (although I liked the mini-series better).

My first non-required monster book was The Stand and that started my love affair with Stephen King books during my 20s. I read Crime and Punishment a few years back and I still find myself thinking about it every so often. Amazing writing!

Les Miserables was last year's tackle and I loved it. Many parts made me cry. Now on my list is Gone with the Wind and a re-read of Tale of Two Cities.

78394 I've just finished Girl with a Pearl Earring and I'm re-reading Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend. A few people are reading A Golden Age - I might have to give that one a look.

78394 Great game! There are some clever girls out there.

How about:

1) Demise of a door-to-door solicitor
2) Female with a oyster-created piece of jewelry
3) Stealer of a paper-bound volume of words

78394 I don't think in my intro I said Melbourne (Victoria) in Australia. Thanks for doing this!

78394 Hi, Im Janine and I'm an American living in Australia. I like reading classics but I also like to read a variety of other types of books. I tend to choose books off the Top 100 books of the Year to start out, and if I like an author I'll read another one of theirs.

I have read all of Jane Austen's, a couple of Charles Dickens (loved Tale of Two Cities), recently finished Les Mis (loved it!), Crime and Punishment (great!), and also like Alexander McCall Smith. One of my favorite books I read in the last couple of years is The Book Thief.

If I could have a super power, it would probably be flying so I wouldn't have to pay so much to fly home and see my family!
