78394 This Sunday, Feb'23,my FREE DOWNLOAD, King Neptune's Delite, is a novel for Middle Graders, Genre: Action & Adventure.

King Neptune's Delite by Gita V. Reddy King Neptune's Delite

The story starts in a tiny fishing village in Kerala, India. Maya finds a bottle with a diamond ring, a newspaper cutting, and a blank paper. She, her brother and their two friends put together these clues and guess someone, probably aboard a ship, had sent out a signal for help.

The children, who have lost their fishermen fathers in a cyclone, work for the owner of a Curio shop. They pick the beach for shells, drift wood, sea glass and anything of value the sea brings in.

Maya is the youngest in the group but she is the practical and sensible one. However, the dazzling find, the appearance of muscled, tattooed Swamy, his suspicious manner and above all, the call of adventure makes even Maya reckless. Instead of going to a grownup or the police, the children decide to go to the rescue of the prisoner. Their quest takes them to the harbor town of Cochin, aboard the ship, 'King Neptune's Delite', and into danger with men for whom bloodshed is a game.

Added to the adventure, the book reveals facets of Indian culture, the community living of small villages where no child is left uncared for, and humour, and fun.

The free download is available on all amazon stores like amazon.com, amazon.uk, amazon.in, etc. but the download is as per US time; approximately 12:00 AM Pacific Standard Time on the date specified.

78394 For me, the sequence up to Tess' arrest makes sense. She saw herself as sullied, not surprising given the times, and she blamed Alec for coercing her by using her family against her. She loved Alex passionately, and hated Alec with an equally strong passion, so she kills him. All this has its own emotional logic. I find it disturbing but I am convinced that is the way it could have happened and I accept it.

Because Tess has difficulty in accepting her own 'fall', she is glad when the soldiers come for her because 'she will not live for Angel to despise' her. I understand her fears. She has seen how severe Angel can be.

I also accept that Tess wants her sister to take her place. Perhaps she does this for both of them.

What I cannot accept is for Angel to go away hand in hand with Tess' sister, after her execution!
Feb 13, 2014 01:40AM

78394 Going by the perceptions of those times, Tess is not a pure woman, and she herself thinks she is not pure. She thinks she is no longer good enough for Angel.

What I wonder about is the intention of Hardy in giving that subtitle to the book.
He had written on a taboo subject. Did he want to reassure his readers or was he mocking them?
Or, did he start with something else in mind (the book appeared as a newspaper serial ), and the story acquired a life of its own, as it often happens.
Feb 13, 2014 01:33AM

78394 I am going back to the lines I quoted before.

"why so often the coarse appropriates the finer thus, the wrong man the woman, the wrong woman the man, many thousand years of analytical philosophy have failed to explain to our sense of order."

Here Tess is raped /seduced by Alec, the wrong man. Even before that, when Angel Clare misses dancing with her in her village, Hardy mentions about the two perfect halves which seldom meet.
This sentiment is echoed in his other books also, in different ways.
Far from the madding crowd, Return of the Native,The Trumpet Major immediately come to mind.
And Jude the Obscure. In a way it is the inverse of Tess. Jude is trapped by trickery into a soul destroying marriage.

78394 Crystal wrote: "Lindsey wrote: "Crystal: My big thought was how can you fall asleep in the the dark woods, when you're lost? Around Alec?! Oh my, but I guess Tess is supposed to be very natural/ nature driven..."..."

And she works on a farm which means she wakes up very early every morning and goes to bed early. She would be very tired after the long day and sleepy too, and as Crystal says, naive. She would have believed that they were truly lost. Alec's presence would have alarmed her but he left her alone which made her feel safe.

78394 I like the restraint Hardy shows, and the subtlety. He took a sensitive topic and handled it so well. He does not blame Tess, rather he 'bemoans' her fate.

"But, might some say, where was Tess's guardian
angel? where was the providence of her simple faith? Perhaps, like that other god of whom the ironical Tishbite spoke, he was talking,or he was pursuing, or he was in a journey, or he was sleeping and
not to be awaked."

Also, he makes it mot the story of Tess alone, but of innocence.

"why so often the coarse appropriates the finer thus, the wrong man the woman, the wrong woman the man, many thousand years of analytical philosophy have failed to explain to our sense of order."

The writers of that age usually ignored such sensitive issues or branded such characters as 'fallen'. A writer of today would probably feel the need to be very explicit; some might go into graphic details as the 'story demands it.'
I feel Hardy makes us feel the impact of the catastrophe by naming Book 1 as 'The Maid', and Book 2 as 'The Maid No More.'
