Voices crosses several genres so where did the idea for originate from?

Roughly how long does it take you to get from the initial idea to the finished product and how do you set about writing it?

Do you gather research first and sketch a plan, or simply just write?

One of the first things that struck me about this book is its suitability for a TV Drama, such strong well defined characters etc. I really think we could do with some quality back on the TV.This would be perfect.
