Yes, too bleak for me. But also I really don't like the style or the execution. I know McCarthy is considered an American Literary Master but I felt like this particular work was almost like the emperor's new clothes and almost wonder if he set out to write the absolute book he could to see if people would still applaud such a thing based merely on his name and reputation.
I'm one of the people you mentioned in your email as being "turned off" by this book - and no I wouln't buy/read any other Cormac McCarthy book. It wasn't just that it was dark and bleak but that it was (imo) lacking on every score that a traditional novel could be ranked on.
I really enjoyed this novel. Gave me a Dresden-like vibe (of which I liked as well). I probably will read more in the series (I have all four) but I'm trying to broaden my reading experiences by sampling a bunch of different autohrs.
Just wanted to say, I just got done listening to the podcast (episode #2) didn't know you had a goodreads group. I really enjoy what you guys are doing "across the pond."
