You make a good point but even with a shoulder rest a violin isn't the most comfortable thing in the world.

I play the violin and I use a shoulder rest but my friend doesn't. Its not because she's trying to show off its just that she prefers not to use one. Jem probably prefers not using a shoulder rest. I doubt he's really trying to impress her that way and if he is I don't know if Tessa would really be that impressed because she doesn't play the violin...
