59158 These books are published by HarperTeen Press but they can be very disturbing. What's your opiniuon as to whether they're suitable reading for kids of "an impressionable age"

59158 Astrid gives Sam a hard time about giving in to Orc's demend of beer for work. I suppose Sam could arrange to have all alcohol in the FAYZ destroyed (sorta like prohibition) Do you think that this would eliminate a problem or just drive it underground?

59158 As a follow up question... Has anyone read A Separate Peace This story revolves around a friendship and a possible momentary act of treachery. I wonder what others thought of this. Particularly in light of Orc's actions and later regrets.

59158 Did anyone else speculate what the countdown clock was leading up to?

My first guess was how long until the Barrier came down and the FAYZ rejoined society at large.

59158 There is a spoiler tag that you can use to hide spoilers about later books. Look at the examples shown in the (some html is ok) link above if you're unsure how to do that.

59158 One of the things that fascinates me and scares me about the whole GONE series that kids 1) have a less developed sense of judgement than mature adults. 2) They tend to live and act in the now 3) they have more energy than adults. 4) They have a greater capacity than adults in pretty much every extreme.

Perhaps it's that they've not learned the inhibitions that adults have learned and are equally capable of the tenderest caring and the most horrific violence. It's this potential for violence, this feeling of menace that gives these books much of their appalling appeal.

I have no kids of my own. I'd be curious what parents think of this.

One should use the SPOILER tag to hide anything from books AFTER HUNGER in this section.

59158 In the early chapters of Hunger Howard attempts to bond with Albert over their both being black. It's really the first time that race is mentioned. At a time when America has its first black President, how high a priority do you think kids today place on race as a factor in judging folks?

59158 In the FAYZ kids tend to hang at Macdonald's to socialize and blow off steam. That's the purpose of this thread. No subject is too taboo.

59158 Here we have a book where all of a sudden, all adult authority disappears. Some kids "go Bad" others are drawn to the good.

Albert is one kid that fascinated me in the first book. The way that he took over the MacDonalds was interesting and his foresight about the potential problems with a society where no one is working were thought provoking.

59158 Hi. I'm Steve and I have been a fan of Gone since I read the first installment. It brings up so many issues and actually encourages thought about real world issues while still being entertaining.

I've checked out the other GONE group but it appeared to me to have devolved into a funhouse not unlike the first few days of the FAYZ. I'd like to dicuss the bigger issues and am setting up a few discussion topics that I hope will get the ball rolling.

Since we don't know each other may I suggest as part of your intro that we play a game called two truths and a lie here's my old standby...

Two truths and a lie:
Once had a pet crow
Twice escaped terrorist attacks
I once met a person who didn't like chocolate
