well, to be honest, it was when I was in fourth grade, randomly channel surfing in the days before cable TV, and in the USA at that time, Dr. Who was only on PBS.
I caught the tail end of "Pyramids of Mars" when the Doctor discovered the crack in time with Romana.

I have been hooked ever since.
